Antimicrobial Alert
10/06/2013
image
Antimicrobial resistance is now recognised as one of the major medical challenges in the 21st century. The potential impact of increasing antimicrobial resistance on the treatment of man and animals is devastating. It is vital therefore that the medical and veterinary professions and the pharmaceutical industry work together to inform, encourage and facilitate the responsible use of antimicrobials. Vetoquinol is part of a collaborative group, which currently includes BSAVA, Abbey Veterinary Laboratories / CAPL, the Bella Moss Foundation and Medimark. The group plans to organise a series of webinars and practical workshops for veterinary surgeons in the UK, with the agreed objective to enable participants to make informed decisions regarding antimicrobial use and infection control in practice. The free webinar series will provide information on 4 key topics: • How to know if infection is present • Sampling and interpretation of culture and sensitivity • Infection control in the practice • Rational use of antimicrobials Webinars will run quarterly, with the first scheduled for later this summer. The practical workshops will build on the information provided by the webinars, and will include sessions on decision making in the use of antimicrobials, client communication, and infection control within the practice. There will be the opportunity to gain practical skills in cytology and interpretation of culture / sensitivity, and to work together to develop protocols for your own practice.

At this years BSAVA Vetoquinol had a charity element to the stand where we challenged delegates to help us to cycle over 200km in aid of Dogs for the Disabled and Pet Savers. This challenge was duly accepted by the delegates of BSAVA as we completed our goal. We also had the pleasure of welcoming three special guests; Paralympic cycling gold medallist Mark Colbourne MBE, Dogs for the Disabled CEO Peter Gorbing and Gail Jones accompanied by her dog Remy to our stand to give some tips and encouragement to the cyclists. A huge thank you from everyone at Vetoquinol to everyone that took part and helped to make the event such a success!
